Stokksnes Beach, dominated by the majestic Vestrahorn mountain, is a photographer's paradise and a must-see destination in Iceland. The Vestrahorn mountain is composed of unstratified plutonic rock, primarily gabbro and granophyre, formed deep within the earth and later exposed by erosion. The black sand beach is a result of volcanic activity, with the sand formed from eroded basalt rock. The area has long been used by locals for farming and fishing, and its dramatic beauty has recently made it a popular filming location. At Stokksnes Beach, visitors can indulge in a variety of activities. Photography is the most popular, with endless opportunities to capture the stunning landscape in different light and weather conditions. Explore the black sand dunes and search for interesting patterns and textures. Walk along the shoreline and listen to the crashing waves. During the winter months, Stokksnes is also a great location for viewing the Northern Lights. There is also a Viking Cafe nearby where you can enjoy a meal with a view. Note that there is a small fee to access the area.
Transportation
Stokksnes Beach is located a short drive east of Höfn. From Höfn, follow Route 1 (the Ring Road) east. Turn onto Road 99 towards the Stokksnes lighthouse. Follow the road until you reach the Viking Cafe and the entrance to the Stokksnes area. There is a small fee to enter the privately owned area.
